Moving On Up
On September 2nd, Lawrence Park hosted our incoming grade
nines for a welcoming morning to ease the transition to secondary school.
Students got their lockers and their timetables and they met teachers and
student leaders. We are very grateful to the buddies who led students as they
did several activities and gave them a chance to tour the school and meet new
friends before the first day of classes.
Scholarship Meeting
A scholarship meeting was held on September 28th
at lunch. Students received information about different
scholarships available and how to apply. Grade 12 students should
have received a scholarship information package through their grad email that
explains the process of applying and a list of scholarships. If
any student would like a copy of the list of scholarships, please email erin.copeland@tdsb.on.ca or refer to
www.scholarshipscanada.com
or www.studentawards.com.
Homework Club
Attention Students! Do you
need help with your homework or would it be beneficial to get started on your
homework with a strong senior student to help you? Then this is
the club for you! We meet every Tuesday and Thursday from 3:20pm
until 4:30 pm in room 115. Light refreshments are provided for
those working and helping.
Thanks to all the senior students that are coming to help
out! Seniors remember to check the schedule in the Guidance
Office, but you are welcome to attend anytime that you can help.
The more students, the merrier!
Grads: Students graduating need to register their email
addresses on lawrenceparkgrads@hotmail.ca so
that they can receive all important information regarding post secondary
options. If you have not done this, please do so
immediately.
Board Games Club: Jill Shaughnessy, our Delisle Youth worker is running
a boards game club for any student who would like to eat their lunch while
playing board games on Tuesdays & Thursdays all through the lunch hour in
room 115.
Community Hours
Community service forms are available in the guidance
office. We strongly suggest that students work toward completing
their community hours by the end of grade 10. In senior grades,
it is recommended that students add extra hours by taking a leadership role in
an organization or activity that interests them. Grade 12 students
should hand in their community service hours before the end of May to Mrs.
Chudziak.
Turn over…..
JVIS
Jackson Vocational Interest Survey
Not sure of your career path? Contact your
Guidance Counsellor to find out more about JVIS and how it works as a career
exploration tool. Students in the Careers classes will have the
opportunity to take the survey this term during class time. JVIS is also
available for all other students to complete at lunch or after school.
Driver’s Education:
The Toronto District School Board offers Drivers Education
courses which run at Lawrence Park. The first session will start
on Oct. 21st and runs until Dec. 9th. The
cost of the course is $650. You can register on line at www.drivered.tdsb.on.ca
TDSB Night School
Deadline to register for night school classes for semester
one was September 22, 2010. The next registration for
semester two is from December 6 to January 21 and classes begin on February 7.

Post-secondary Assemblies
Student Services held its first post-secondary assembly for grade 12
students on September 20th. A key message delivered is that over the
next few months students should be researching all possible options –
university, college, apprenticeship programs and gap year programs. Their first
step should be to attend the Ontario University Fair held at the Metro
Convention Centre on Sept. 24, 25 and 26th and the Ontario College
Fair at the CNE on October 19th. It goes without saying
that they should also be attending classes and submitting assignments to ensure
that as many doors are kept open as possible. The next assembly, to talk about
the actual application process to post-secondary institutions and PIN
distribution for OUAC, is to be held on Tuesday, November 23.
Careers classes
Students will be introduced to Personality Dimensions, a tool used to
identify different temperaments and their effects on behaviour at school and in
the work place. In addition, students will be given the opportunity to do the
Jackson Vocational Interest Survey (JVIS) in their career class. It is hoped
that these two tools will help students know their strengths and ultimately know
themselves better.
We will be inviting guest speakers to come to the careers classes, to
give students real life examples of the many career paths possible as one goes
through life.
Buddies
The Buddy program has had an excellent start to the year.
An enthusiastic group of Grade 11 and 12 students were on hand to greet our
incoming Grade 9s at our Moving On Up/Head Start day on September 2, and have
been hard at work developing and running programs with our Grade 9 students on
Wednesday mornings throughout September. Working in conjuctions with the
Lawrence Park Athletic Council (LPAC) and our Student Council, we have also
participated in Grade 9 Activity Day festivities and are all looking forward to
creating some lasting memories during our visit to Muskoka Woods on October
27-29th. From this point on, Buddy sessions will be occurring once each month
and our sessions will focus on a range of topics and activities to help us all
make the most of our time at LP.
Please make sure your child attends these sessions, and
thank you for your support of the Buddy program at LP. We hear consistently
from students that they became a Buddy in their senior years because of the
positive impact the program had for them in their Gr. 9 year and they want to be
able to contribute to that experience.
The schedule for our sessions for the remainder of
the year is:
Wednesday, October 13 @ 9:00
Wednesday, November 24 @ 9:00
Wednesday, December 15 @ 9:00
